Newsletter

It's been a while since our last issue was out, but I have been gathering a lot of information for this issue. Please spend a little time to read through it.

Summer Outing

The sun was out, the day was nice, the food was great, once again the summer outing was a great success. I know everyone enjoyed the outing. The Millstone had revamped the building and the layout is a lot nicer, after the food we have live entertainment and bingo to help the afternoon along. I think everyone is looking forward to going back next year.

A.G.M.

The chairman and committee would like to thank all those people who turned up to the A.G.M. All of the committee were presented and there was a full and interesting speech about the various aspects of the society. The main news was of the 2 new members to the committee, The Under secretary and the Fund raiser.

Committee change; The secretary Mrs Fisher (Stella) has now stepped down to let the under secretary Mrs S Hull take over. Mrs Hull (Susan) was voted in by the committee to take over from Mrs Fisher on the 21st July 2004 as Mrs Fisher has become too ill to continue her duties with the society. Mrs Fisher has been involved with the society for over 20 years and secretary for over 10 years . The committee hopes that she gets well soon and continues to keep in touch with the branch.

Charity Fund Raiser

Our new fund raiser Mr. K. Hull organised a sponsored bike ride from the Monkey pub in Gt Horton Bradford to Skipton and back again. This along with other fund raising events at the Monkey pub managed to raise £1100.00 We would like to thank everyone that took part in the events.

The chairman has done a full report on the event.

Chairmans Report

The bike ride went well with all 7 riders making it to Skipton and back, raising over £1000 for the resource and information centre. The night went well with a big raffle and the riders resting well with a pint. The chairman and committee of the Bradford branch would like to thank the Monkey pub and all those people who sponsored them and who bought raffle tickets.

The committee have voted in favour of opening the centre subject to approval by the National MS Centre. We are just waiting for confirmation and then we can get started. More to come on this later.

Types of MS

We were asked if we could give more information on types of MS. This is only a rough guide and should not be used as a diagnosis.

There are 3 main types of MS as described by the MS Society. These are as follows.

  1. Relapsing Remitting MS
Symptoms occur for a period of days, weeks, months and then improve either partially or completely. When the symptoms settle down, the person is said to be in remission. Remissions can last any length of time, even years.
  2. Secondary Progressive MS
When someone with relapsing remitting MS shows a substained deteriation for at least 6 months they are said to have secondary progressive MS. Not everybody with relapsing remitting MS goes on to develop the secondary progressive form. An average, by 15 years, approximatley 65% of people with relapsing remitting MS will have developed secondary progressive MS.
  3. Primary Progressive MS
This is an unusual form of MS, affecting about 10 - 15% of people with MS. People with primary progressive MS tend to be diagnosed when they are a little older, usually in their forties or later.

These descriptions were taken from the booklet “ Just diagnosed with MS” If you would like further information please contact Helen Gallagher, your MS Welfare officer.
